The Addison Rotary Club recently welcomed Ann Germann of The Senior Source as guest speaker for its weekly meeting. Germann presented “Beat the Heat with The Senior Source,” highlighting the serious risks extreme heat poses to older adults and the practical ways the community can help protect vulnerable seniors during North Texas summers.
The Senior Source, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life of older adults in greater Dallas, plays a critical role in helping seniors remain safe, supported, and connected. Germann shared that heat remains one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities and emphasized that older adults are especially vulnerable when temperatures rise.
A key focus of the presentation was The Senior Source’s Beat the Heat initiative, which provides much-needed cooling assistance to older adults. Through the program, The Senior Source has distributed more than 600 window air conditioning units and more than 200 box fans, helping seniors stay safe in their homes during periods of dangerous heat.
Germann also encouraged Addison Rotary members and community supporters to get involved through donations and volunteer service. Upcoming distribution events include July 11 at Irving Cares in Irving and July 25 at Tyler Street Church in Oak Cliff. Volunteers help ensure that cooling units and fans reach the people who need them most.
“The Senior Source is doing important, practical, life-protecting work for older adults in our community,” said David Heimer, President of the Addison Rotary Club. “Ann’s presentation reminded us that something as basic as a fan or window air conditioner can make a real difference for a senior facing extreme summer heat.”
