Chad Baruch

Our speaker this week is Chad Baruch. Mr. Baruch is a high-profile Dallas appellate lawyer. He is board-certified in civil appellate law, and has served as Chairman of the Board of the State Bar of Texas. He has been voted onto the "Top 100 in Texas" list of Texas Super Lawyers for six of the past seven years. He is a recognized constitutional scholar, and is a known expert on judicial review and its foundational opinion, Marbury vs. Madison. He is going to speak to us on The Rule of Law.

Bio: Dallas attorney Chad Baruch served as the 85th Chair of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, and remains the only Jewish chair or president in the Bar's history. As the Texas Lawbook recently wrote, Chad is hired by "big corporate America" for "bet-the-company" appeals. A former high school and college basketball coach and government professor, Chad is board certified in civil appellate law.

Chad has been voted to the "Top 100 in Texas" list of Texas Super Lawyers six of the past seven years. LawDragon recently named him one of the "500 Leading Lawyers in America."

In 2015, Chad wrote perhaps the most acclaimed legal brief in American history while representing what the New York Times called a "glittering array of hip hop stars." The "Hip Hop Brief" received national media attention, including feature stories in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. One newspaper called it "the greatest amicus brief in Supreme Court history."

In 2017, Chad was one of two nominated candidates for President of the State Bar of Texas. He won the 2018 Patrick Wiseman Memorial Award, presented annually to an attorney who has made superior career contributions to the defense of constitutional rights and civil liberties in Texas. A recognized constitutional scholar, Chad also serves as a contributor to Black's Law Dictionary and has lectured across the country on Marbury v. Madison. His scholarly work has been cited as legal authority in three published appellate opinions, and in more than 30 law review articles.

A former college and high school head basketball coach, Chad was a Finalist for State Coach of the Year from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in 2006. He has served as the men's basketball coach at the University of Dallas and Paul Quinn College.

Volunteer Event at Raptor Center

On June 7, Addison Rotary participated in a volunteer event at the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center. Michael Pugh, Dan Tatum, David Heimer, Charlie Brown and Ashton, Kristen Merkins and daughter Jennifer, Diane Fullingim, and Susan Bernard (a Rotarian from the Allen Rotary) participated. They made paper mache enrichment toys to keep the Ambassador raptors mentally stimulated and engaged. A good time was had by all.

NOTES FROM DAVID

We had a fascinating presentation last week, wonderful visitors, a raffle winner, and a likely new member! (Thank you, Fritzie Roop, for the new member!) WHEW. If you weren't there you missed a great meeting!

It was wonderful to see Saku Anazama again, just before he goes home to Japan. Congratulations to Mike Pugh, Dan Tatum, and Kelly Ware (Carrollton Rotary) for making Saku's stay so successful. Saku's a terrific kid. We hope he comes back to visit us.

Dawn Lewis of Terra Clear Foundation gave us a fascinating presentation about simple, effective clean water systems for Laos.

A shout out to Jay Stevenson who did an impromptu fund raiser for the Terra Clear Foundation and gave the money to our speaker, Dawn Lewis. We donated about $260! (BTW - Dawn is a member of one of the Austin Rotary Clubs).

And Janet Won the Raffle!
