Shannon Dion is a founding director of Secure Our Seniors' Safety (SOSS). Shannon's mother, Doris Gleason, was one of over twenty victims of the notorious Billy Chemirmir, who smothered and robbed senior citizens in their Dallas-area homes before 2018. SOSS was founded in 2019 by Ms. Dion and other victims' family members. The mission of SOSS is to pursue legislation to require common sense security measures that the senior care industry has failed to enact on its own and to make the public aware of the vulnerabilities in senior living. Ms. Dion will share her story with us and tell usa bout the work of SOSS.
Update on the Anniversary Celebration - Bad Weather Will Not Stop the Party!
The 40th anniversary celebration of the Addison Rotary Club on Wednesday, October 30 at 5:30 pm will go on rain or shine! Greg Grimm says that if rain happens, we can still meet, utilizing the conference room near Maguire's instead of the rooftop. We have 35 members (and spouses) who have responded that they are coming as well as 14 former members. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the event!
Notes From David...
I'm still on a high from our check presentation to the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. $215,000! Way to go, everyone! As a thank you, the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas thoughtfully offered to host us at the Trains of Northpark. Since it is difficult for us to arrange times to gather in different locations, I asked if they would instead give us 100 tickets to the Trains of Northpark. Anyone in our club is welcome to some of these tickets. We will donate whatever is left over to the Anne Frank Elementary school. This will be good for us, good for the Ronald McDonald House, and good for the Anne Frank school.
If you were in our last meeting, you saw that Jill Comnock submitted her application for membership. Yay! In that same meeting we had another visitor, Charlie Brown, who subsequently said she would like to join the club. This is great! We need more members. If you know people who would benefit from being a member, PLEASE invite them to a meeting and contact either Wendy Seale or me. Let me know if I can help.
Speaking of memberships... In another bulletin I mentioned "Join or Die", the documentary about the important role of clubs and other social/service organizations in our society. "Join or Die" is now on Netflix. I just watched it and it's good. You should watch it. As you would expect, Rotary is mentioned several times. More important, the documentary explains why clubs like Rotary are so important, and why we need to encourage people to join. The benefits to society are tremendous, but the benefits to members are just as significant. People who are members of clubs are healthier, live longer, and report greater satisfaction with their lives. They make our civil life stronger, and they make the world a better place.
I'm looking forward to our 40th Anniversary Party. Greg Grimm has done a masterful job planning it and inviting past and future members. See you there!
