Kate Johnson used her Girl Scout Gold Award project to raise awareness and increase empathy for people living with physical differences. Kate was born with Neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes tumors to grow throughout the body and bones. She had her right leg amputated at age 4 and has experienced bullying due to her physical appearance. These experiences led Kate to write poetry about treating people with kindness and respect no matter what they look like. For her Gold Award, Kate combined her love for poetry with her desire to raise awareness for those with differences. She collected poems from people living with disabilities and differences and published them into a book to advocate for kindness around the world.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. To earn a Gold Award, a Girl Scout must complete a project that addresses a root cause the girl feels passionate about, addresses a national or global issue, ensures the girl demonstrates leadership, and must be sustainable and measurable. Additionally, the project must take at least 80 hours to complete.
Kate is a senior at Plano Senior High School. She plans to attend West Texas A&M in the fall and pursue a degree in early education.
Just to reiterate a bit of the email I sent last week, our Board approved our move to a new weekly meeting location, conveniently in the next building immediately south of our current location. It is also the building where Wendy Seale has her offices. Wendy was the key person in getting this location for us I am extremely grateful to her! We will do a quick walk through of the new meeting space Friday after our meeting.
Our presentation of the 10 Language Learning systems for the Anne Frank Elementary school will be Thursday at 1pm (arrive at 12:30) at the school. Let me know if you want to attend.
We need a 1-2 page flyer to use for people who are interested in joining our club. Kind of a Marketing/About Us/ Expectations document. Let me know if this already exists. Since it probably doesn't I'm looking for a volunteer to create it.
